Kleiner Kudu Tragelaphus imberbis (Blyth, 1869)


English: Lesser Kudu; French: Petit Koudou; Acholi: Nyamugata; Amharic: Ambarayelle, Sara; Dborobo: Chaihoo; Galla: Gadams; Kiswahili: Tandala ndogo; Maasai: Emato Enhatu; Somah: Anderio or Gdoir.

Former distribution: As now.
Present distribution: Eastern and southern Ethiopia, Somalia, southern Sudan, Kenya, north-east Tanzania, northern Uganda.
Behaviour: Preferred habitat: semi-arid thick bush regions; living singly or in pairs: predominantly browsers of twigs, leaves, fruits, roots and grasses; they are active at twilight and by day. Predators include leopards, wild dogs, lions and – for the calves – serval, caracal, baboons and pythons.
Population status: Stable. Estimated numbers: no records.

2. Tragelaphus i. australis Kenya and north-east Tanzania. Stable.
Remarks: The validity of 2 subspecies is not clear; a revision is needed, as well information on population status.
