Present distribution: Africa, south of the Sahara and south to the Cape Province; from Senegal east to western Ethiopia, northern and south-western Uganda, southern Somalia, south-eastern and south-western Kenya, western Tanzania, Zambia, southern Zaire, southern Angola, Caprivi-Strip in Namibia, northern Botswana, central Zimbabwe to Mozambique, and in South Africa in Transvaal, Orange Free State and the eastern parts of the Cape Province.
Behaviour: Preferred habitat: open grassland plains with light bush cover in the vicinity of water; they live singly or in pairs; active at twilight; predominantely grazers. Predators: See Steinböckchen
Population status: Probably stable, rare in Angola.
